Negligent Doctor Delivers Three Permanently Disabled Babies

A doctor employed by the federal government has been the center of several lawsuits in Miami, Florida, following the delivery of three permanently disabled infants. The on-call doctor at a federally-qualified clinic, he was recently found negligent in the delivery of a baby who suffered permanent brain damage. The federal government will be on the hook for the $33.8 million settlement.

In that particular incident, the doctor allegedly failed to perform a Caesarean section and walked away from his patient to call his stockbroker for nearly 10 minutes. The baby was delivered blue in the face and with limp limbs. Had the doctor delivered the baby just a half hour earlier, said an expert, the child likely would have been left unscathed. Instead, the boy suffered severe brain damage.

This isn’t the first time the doctor has been accused of medical malpractice. Two other infants born that year would also suffer permanent injury at the doctor’s hands. One mother accused him of rushing her delivery, using a vacuum device that left her daughter disfigured. The girl has permanent nerve damage to her shoulder and neck.

Another young mother claims the doctor ignored signs of distress and waited too long to perform a Caesarean section. Her daughter was born with brain damage.

Sources report that this doctor was paid $350 for every child he delivered. One has to wonder if putting a price tag on a delivery like this incentivizes doctors to rush through what should be a very delicate, sensitive time for a young mother. We can only hope that after being hit with such expensive settlements, the federal government does a better job providing services to families.
